It’s that time of year again, which means the impending dread of going back to work, attempting to motivate a team of bleary co-workers. The New Year blues, as it’s been coined, is often felt after the Christmas period and it can be challenging to encourage others back on track. Often, the productivity of a workforce can take up to two weeks to get up to speed. Employees spend the first week in a fog of post-Christmas gossip, reminiscence and personal goal setting. So how can managers help engage their team from day 1? We’ve listed 5 tips to boost team morale this New Year.
1. Involve them
Make it your priority to share the year’s business goals with your team. Highlight the exciting opportunities ahead and how each of the team will help make it happen. Encourage conversation and questions, and leave the team feeling ready to get stuck in.
2. Set a competition
Motivate employees to make every day count by setting a fun team competition. Whether this be a sales target, problem-solving task or speed challenge, the team compete to claim a reward. Employees love going head-to-head with their team mates, and it’ll quickly ignite determination and focus.
3. Celebrate successes
At the end of the week gather your team to share their successes. These could be small wins, but re-enforcement of every success will breed positivity. Try a team stand-up to bring energy to a traditional seated meeting and see the results as employees take pride in their achievements.
4. Plan a social
Ok. I know its January and party season has been and gone, but everyone loves an excuse to ditch the office. Pick a future date and get planning. This could be a team-building afternoon or after-hours drinks, but either way your calendar invite will offer something to look forward to.
5. Make them feel valued
Don’t forget, January is a month of reflection and not all reflection is positive. Showing your employees you value them is one of the best morale-boosting actions you can take. A simple ‘well done’ can go a long way.
With a motivated workforce productivity will increase but most importantly you will build better relationships and happier teams.
